Physical exercise, the body and anti-inflammatory phenomena

For decades, scientists have known that physical exercise leads to an increase in the production of cannabis-like substances in the body.

This is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Contrary to popular belief, the "runner's high" that people experience after cardiovascular training is more strongly associated with cannabinoids produced by our own bodies than with endorphins.

Not only are endocannabinoids produced by our bodies via running exercises: weightlifting and bodybuilding exercises also have this power. These self-made 'happy molecules' don't just make us feel good, they also reduce inflammation.

New research from the University of Nottingham identifies how 15 minutes of sustained exercise (six days a week) can trigger a chain reaction that increases endocannabinoids, alters the gut microbiome and reduces inflammatory cytokines. These results (Vijay et al., 2021) were published on 17 November in the peer-reviewed journal Gut Microbes.

Why is this of interest to us at SOWÉ?

Quite simply, because our main active ingredient, Cannabidiol, also has a role to play in our endocannabinoid system. This is why numerous medical studies are underway to better understand the power of this active ingredient and the role it would play in our pharmacopoeia as a notable anti-inflammatory.
