Manufacturing of rosemary essential oil like camphor or cineol

Rosemary essential oil is made from the leaves and flowers of rosemary, an aromatic plant native to the Mediterranean basin. There are several methods for extracting rosemary essential oil, but the most common is steam distillation. Here are the steps of this process:

  • Rosemary leaves and flowers are harvested, preferably in spring or summer, when they are most fragrant.
  • They are washed and dried carefully, then placed in a still, a device that separates volatile substances from solid substances.
  • We heat water in a tank, which will transform into steam and pass through the rosemary plants. The steam will carry with it the aromatic molecules of the rosemary, which will condense in a tube cooled by cold water or ice.
  • The condensed liquid is recovered, which contains water and rosemary essential oil.
  • They are separated using an essencier, a container which allows liquids of different densities to be separated. Rosemary essential oil, lighter than water, will float on the surface and can be collected in a bottle.

The rosemary essential oil thus obtained is a colorless or slightly yellowish oil, with a fresh and herbaceous scent.
