  • Prickly pear seed oil: why origin and process make all the difference


    Most brands selling prickly pear oil do not choose their fruit. They buy raw materials from Moroccan or Tunisian supply chains, pressed according to industrial schedules that prioritise volume over harvest quality. The result is a decent oil, but far from what the prickly pear cactus is capable of producing when treated differently.

    At SOWÉ, we built our approach on the opposite conviction: the quality of a prickly pear seed oil is entirely determined by three variables no one talks about — geographic origin, the moment of harvest, and the duration of the extraction process. Change any one of these variables and everything else changes too.

    Why Portugal, and not Morocco

    Morocco is the world's leading producer of prickly pear oil. That is not a criticism, it is a market reality. But this concentration of production in a single territory has a direct consequence: supply chains are optimised for quantity, not for the biochemical quality of the fruit.

    The prickly pear cactus also grows in southern Portugal, where the temperate Atlantic climate creates different ripening conditions: less dry winters, less scorching summers, lower water stress for the plant. This climatic context directly influences the concentration of phenolic compounds in the fruit. A fruit that ripens slowly, without excessive water stress, accumulates more polyphenols in its seeds — this is a well-documented plant defence mechanism.

    Our cultivation is organic, certified COSMOS Organic by Ecocert, established in southern Portugal. The entire chain — planting, harvesting, extraction, formulation — is controlled within a tight perimeter, which allows us to guarantee what we could not guarantee by purchasing raw materials on an open market.

    Harvest maturity: the parameter no one mentions

    A prickly pear harvested too early does not have the same seeds as one harvested at full maturity. This is obvious for any fruit, but in industrial supply chains, harvesting is rarely synchronised with the optimal maturity of the seeds. You harvest when it is logistically possible, not when the fruit is at the peak of its active compound concentration.

    A mature prickly pear seed contains its maximum concentrations of essential fatty acids — notably more than 60% linoleic acid (omega-6) — tocopherols (vitamin E), phytosterols and phenolic compounds. These values fall when the fruit is immature. Pressing too early means extracting an impoverished oil, even if it is technically pure and cold-pressed.

    We harvest at full maturity, which shows up in the measurements: our oil displays a phenolic compound content of 444 mg of gallic acid per gram of oil. This is a figure we had measured, and it directly reflects the quality of the raw material at source.

    Cold extraction: necessary, but insufficient if rushed

    Cold-pressed has become a marketing claim as common as it is insufficient. Technically, it means the extraction does not exceed 27 °C according to European standards, which preserves fatty acids and part of the heat-sensitive compounds. But it says nothing about the duration of the process, nor about what happens after pressing.

    The prickly pear seed is particularly small and contains little oil — about 5% of its dry weight. It takes approximately one tonne of fruit to obtain fifty kilograms of seeds, and these seeds must be pressed slowly to avoid generating friction heat. Going fast means rising temperatures. Rising temperatures means degrading flavonoids and part of the tocopherols.

    Our pressing process is slow by design, using low-throughput presses. This is not an aesthetic choice — it is the only way to keep the actual temperature below the degradation threshold of the most fragile active compounds.

    Cold maceration of flowers: a second extraction within the first

    A prickly pear seed oil, even of exceptional quality, only exploits part of the prickly pear cactus's potential. The flowers of Opuntia ficus-indica contain a family of compounds absent from the seeds: liposoluble flavonoids — quercetin, kaempferol, isorhamnetin — and phytosterols including beta-sitosterol, with documented anti-inflammatory and repairing properties on the dermis.

    These compounds cannot be extracted by cold-pressing the seeds. They require infusion in a lipid solvent, and freshly pressed seed oil is the best possible solvent, as it shares the same chemical phase.

    The maceration we practise is slow: several weeks of contact between dried flowers and the seed oil, at a controlled ambient temperature, never exceeding 30 °C. The compounds gradually migrate into the oil phase. The longer the maceration, the more complete the transfer — provided the process is not heated to accelerate it, which would be counterproductive.

    The result is a measured antioxidant activity of 89.2% — significantly higher than what a seed oil alone can achieve, regardless of its quality.

    What the biochemistry produces on the skin

    Pure prickly pear seed oil is already a complete anti-ageing formula. With more than 60% linoleic acid (omega-6), it restores the ceramides of the stratum corneum, the molecules that ensure the skin's impermeability and limit transepidermal water loss. Its tocopherol concentration neutralises free radicals that attack membrane lipids.

    The enrichment with macerated flowers adds two mechanisms that seeds alone do not cover.

    Enzymatic inhibition of dermal ageing. The flavonoids in the flower — particularly quercetin — naturally inhibit collagenase and elastase, the two enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin with age and sun exposure. Slowing these enzymes structurally reduces the formation of deep wrinkles, rather than merely filling their appearance.

    Pigmentation regulation. Gallic acid, present at 444 mg/g, regulates tyrosinase, the enzyme responsible for melanin synthesis. An in vitro study conducted by CBIOS (Universidade Lusófona) and iMed.ULisboa (Faculty of Pharmacy of Lisbon) measured this enzymatic inhibition on L-tyrosine substrate, in three independent experiments in triplicate. Result: an inhibitory activity statistically equivalent to kojic acid (p > 0.05) — the reference molecule used in dermatology for treating hyperpigmentation1. This is the mechanism through which the oil contributes to a more even complexion and the fading of pigmentation spots over several weeks of use.

    These two combined actions, against a backdrop of skin barrier restoration by linoleic acid, are consistent with documented results on organic cold-pressed prickly pear seed oil: 92% of users observed a clearer complexion, 100% a reduction in pigmentation spots and 80% a visible reduction in wrinkles, after 28 days of daily application on a panel of approximately 60 women aged 45 to 652.

    How to recognise a genuinely high-quality prickly pear seed oil

    The market is saturated with products displaying the same claims without those terms covering the same reality. Here are the questions to ask.

    What is the geographic origin of the fruit? This is not a question of national origin as such, but of access to supply chain information. If a brand cannot specify where its fruit comes from and at what stage of maturity it was harvested, it is buying on a spot market with no traceability.

    Are analytical data available? A gallic acid content, an antioxidant activity measurement, a documented fatty acid profile — these distinguish a traceable formula from a commercial one. Their presence is a strong signal.

    Is the flower enrichment a maceration or an added dry extract? A dry flower extract added to an oil is not equivalent to a slow maceration. Liposoluble compounds integrate differently depending on the process. Maceration in the oil phase ensures superior cutaneous bioavailability.
